How secure is the On-Line Investment site?
On-Line Investment is secure and you can be assured that your transactions are held in the strictest confidence.

Imagine sending a friend a letter. For us it's as simple as dropping it in a mailbox for the carrier to pick up and deliver. Now imagine that instead of just dropping it into the mailbox, you put the letter through a shredder that only you have the key to and then into the mailbox. And instead of one carrier coming to pick it up, the post office sends 100 carriers to each take a piece of your letter. They each go on their own route through all sorts of neighborhoods to your friend's house. Once there, your friend takes this pile of incomprehensible paper, puts it through a reverse shredder that they only have a key to, and out comes your letter, safe and sound.

If we sent information through the traditional manner of one letter, one carrier and one route, it would be easy for a criminal to find the truck carrying your letter and pick it out. So we use the 100 carrier method, otherwise known as RSA public-key cryptography. It's become a standard on the Internet wherever private or sensitive information is concerned. The government uses it, the financial industry uses it and now, so can you.

Security has always been a top priority with Johnson Financial Group. It will continue to be so as we adopt new technologies only after they've passed our unchanging business principles of confidentiality, flexibility, commitment and stability. To have it any other way would not only endanger your finances, but our reputation, and that is never good for business.

All communication over the Internet is encrypted using 128 bit (strong) SSL encryption.

What is 128 bit "strong" SSL encryption? Does the user need a special browser for it?
Web browsers come in two different "flavors": 40-bit and 128-bit secure socket layer encryption. 40-bit "weak" encryption can be broken by a supercomputer in a short time. 128-bit "strong" encryption is virtually impossible to break. Because we are a financial institution, we use a special type of SSL that allows users with 40 bit browsers to use 128-bit encryption. All communication uses 128-bit encryption, and the user does not need a special browser or any special add-ons.

For added security it is important to logout and close your browser when you have completed your transaction in On-Line Investment. In addition, some browsers have the ability to retain information in memory. In this instance, check the preferences of your browser to heighten the security or turn off its memory capabilities. Check with your browser's customer support area for more information.

What is a cookie?
A cookie is a small amount of information that a Web site stores on your computer. Many Internet users have the misconception that we use cookies to gather personal information and track their activities. On-Line Investment uses cookies inside the secure environment to keep track of your session. Basically it tells the system that you've already logged in as a valid user.

Cookies are not used to read information off of the user's hard drive. The On-Line Investment system does not use cookies to gather or store personal information. When you hit "Exit" or close your browser, all of the cookies are removed from your system

To keep my brokerage information private, what recommendations do you have?

  • Use the latest version of either Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer. Both of these browsers are certified for use at our site.
  • Keep your password confidential. Change it frequently to ensure that no one else can guess it, and do not let anyone else use it.
  • Never walk away from your computer without exiting the system first. When you are finished with your account, click the Exit button located at the top and bottom navigational toolbars and then close your browser. Once you have ended your session, no further transactions can be processed until you sign on to the system again.

Web Browser Questions

What Web browsers does On-Line Investment support?
On-Line Investment supports the following browsers: Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.01 or above Netscape version 4.06 or above. High, or 128-bit, encryption is required for both of these browsers. The system will automatically detect the presence of the 128-bit encryption pack the first time you try to sign on to On-Line Investment. If you do not have this already installed, you will be prompted to download a file to install the appropriate encryption level.

On-Line Investment also requires that Javascript and Cookies are enabled in your browser. Javascript and cookies are enabled by default, if you have disabled them please use your browser's "Help" feature for instructions on re-enabling those features

How can I tell if I have a secured connection to On-Line Investment Account Access?
The On-Line Investment Account Access requires a secure connection, so if you can log in and use the site, your connection is secure. Here is how you can verify the connection is secure in your browser:

  • Netscape Navigator 4.5 and above - look for an icon of a padlock in the bottom left corner of the browser. If it is in a locked position, you have a secured connection. If unlocked, you have an unsecured connection. You can also right-click on the web page and choose "View Frame Info". Under "Security" it will state that it is a secure document.
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 and above - Due to the design of the site, the small padlock may not appear in the bottom bar of the browser even though the connection is secure. To verify the security of the connection, right-click on the page and choose "Properties". Under Protocol it will state "HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy", which means it is a secure connection.

If I logout and then hit my "Back" button, I can still see my account information. Why does this happen?

Internet Explorer users can disable "caching" using the following method:

  • From the "Tools" menu choose Internet Options (In IE 4 you will choose Internet Options from the "View" menu)
